Hi Citrix Guru's

I am in the middle of Planning Upgradation PS4.0 Enterprise Edition to XenApp5.0 *Enterprise Edition* on Windows 2003.

Scenario: Our environment is One Farm-Two Zones and with totals 24 servers. Each zone consist of 12 server (6*x32bit & 6*x64bit servers) with PS 4.0 Enterprise Edition. Current patch level of x32 bit servers is R03.

I know as per Citrix Documents I cannot directly upgrade to XenApp 5.0 Enterprise Edition. I need to transit through PS 4.5 Enterprise Edition

*Which scenario should I use?*

1) *Scenario 1*: PS 4.0 Enterprise Edition *-->* PS 4.5 Enterprise Edition (Completed first PS 4.5 on all x32 & x64 bit Servers) and then move to *-->* XenApp 5.0

2) *Scenario 2:* PS 4.0 Enterprise Edition *-->*PS 4.5 Enterprise Edition with Feature Pack 1 (Completed first PS 4.5 on all x32 & x64 bit Servers) and then move to *-->* XenApp 5.0

3) *Scenario 3:* PS 4.0 Enterprise Edition *-->* PS 4.5 Enterprise Edition with Feature Pack 1*-->* XenApp 5.0 (Phase-by-Phase)

4) *Scenario 4:* PS 4.0 Enterprise Edition *-->* PS 4.5 Enterprise Edition *-->* XenApp 5.0 (Phase-by-Phase).

Thanks in Advance

First question is on design, why do you have 2 zones for 24 server?

Second thing is more to do with your readiness to go Server 2008 for XenApp5 if you have tested the build and application compatibility on Server 2008 I would like to go there rather than finish a migrate to 4.5. Saying that looks like you have a migration plan and are going to 5.0 just because you can (subscription advantage?), in that case build out a test environment and look at the features you want in Server 2008/XenApp 5.0 before placing all your eggs there.

Have a look at (http://www.brianmadden.com/blog/BrianMadden/Is-anyone-using-Windows-Server-2008-Terminal-Services-yet) for some good info.

Good luck let us know what you do.

Emil,

The reason I have Two Zone for 24 servers because each half of the servers are physically located in two different cities.

About, question I raised I got the answer that only PS 4.5 + XenApp Plug-in's (Client Streaming, PNA, Web Plug-in) = XenApp 5.0.

After, upgrading from PS 4.0 to XenApp 5.0 It is show PS 4.5 in AMC console is that right.

Thanks for reply.

that is what Citrix calls Xenapp5.0 :) you get 2 more goodies which are actually already included in 4.5 FR1 so know you get a new question :) Why would you upgrade to Xenapp5.0 if you already get the new stuf in 4.5FR1. You are able to stream applications and make them available offline (mind this consumes concurrent licenses). I wouldn't upgrade any higher then 4.5FR1 from my personal opinion.

Cool,

I totally missed that you were staying on Server 2003 :-(

Sorry to be a bit off topic but I think Zone design is very important and I go on a bit about it... Check out Brian's online content regarding this http://www.brianmadden.com/book/Citrix-Presentation-Server-45-Advanced-Technical-Design-Guide/Zones-and-zone-data-collectors

Under the section:

Splitting your Farm into Zones

I also would recommend this doc:

http://support.citrix.com/servlet/KbServlet/download/17904-102-19242/Technical%20Guide%20for%20Upgrading%20or%20Migrating%20to%20XenApp%205%2010-23.pdf

It has a lot of internal advertising but has good information on the infrastructure (etc.) components that you need for the migration e.g. License Server and WI.

Also in this doc it states that you can go from 4.0 to 5.0 on Server 2003.

"Presentation Server 4.0 for Windows Server 2003 can be upgraded to Presentation Server 4.5 or XenApp 5 for Windows Server 2003, which are based on the same Server CD installation."
